Prof Ciku Mathenge is Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, Specializing in Diseases of the Retina. and is a Founding Director of RIIO and RIIO iHospital.
Prof Mathenge received her medical degree from the University of. She subsequently attended the same University for her specialization in Ophthalmology. She completed her Masters Of Science in Community Ophthalmology at the University of London Institute of Ophthalmology with distinction and later graduated with a PhD focusing her research on retinal diseases in African eyes from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She then proceed to pursue a fellowship in medical retina form the Retina Foundation in India.
Prof Mathenge is a leading researcher in ophthalmology on the African continent including carrying out the first Rapid Assessment of Avoidable blindness study in the world in Nakuru Kenya and the first Randomised trial in artificial intelligence for diabetic retinopathy screening in Rwanda. She was previously the Head of Department at the Kigali Health Institute and was appointed a full Professor in Ophthalmology in 2014 by the University of Rwanda. Prof Mathenge is currently the Program Director at the RIIO School of Ophthalmology.
As a comprehensive ophthalmologist, Prof Mathenge has special interests in cataract surgeries, glaucoma surgeries, paediatric ophthalmology and trauma surgery. Her additional specialism and experience is in the medical management of diabetic eye diseases and other retinal conditions.

Dr. Tsedeke Asaminew Alemu is a consultant
ophthalmologist, vitreoretinal subspecialist and medical educator with more
than 11 years of experience in teaching, providing static and community
outreach ophthalmic service, and research in the field of ophthalmology and
medical education. He has held several leadership positions and served in the
areas of quality service and medical education. He has served in the capacity
building of health professionals nationally and internationally. He is the former
president of Ophthalmological Society of Ethiopia and is the current chair of
Education and Accreditation committee of the College of Ophthalmology of
Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa.

Dr. John Cropsey is a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, treating eye diseases from the front to the back of the eye in children and adults.
Dr. Cropsey joined the RIIO faculty in 2022 and serves as the Director of Clinical Training and Global Ophthalmology. Dr. Cropsey received his medical degree with distinction from the University of Michigan and completed his ophthalmology residency training at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia where he was selected to be co-chief resident.
He subsequently completed a two year global ophthalmology fellowship with Dr. Ben Roberts at the Tenwek Eye Unit in Rift Valley, Kenya. Subsequently,
Dr. Cropsey and his wife led a multi-disciplinary team developing Hope Africa University’s medical school teaching hospital at Kibuye, Burundi. He was the founder and chief of service of the ophthalmology department there.

Janvier Murenzi Joined RIIO in November 2019 as Operations Manager he has
Strategic, technical and programmatic responsibilities :
Directly manages day-to-day operations at RIIO, provides technical expertise on issues related to program strengthening
Lead technical expertise as regards to planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all RIIO Projects
Coordinates the Human Resource Team and Manages RIIO Finances in order to develop and implement sustainable programs that align with RIIO Strategic Framework.
Janvier is an MBA holder with over 15 years of solid experience in Program Management (Strategic planning and development, policy development and advocacy skills, Human and financial management skills, monitoring and Evaluation, stakeholders engagement, Risk Management ), Child and Women Rights; leadership,communication, Economic Empowerment, Workforce Readiness and Entrepreneurship in both developmental and humanitarian context.
Prior to Joining RIIO, Janvier worked as Senior Program Manager for almost 8 years within International NGOs (The Fred Hollows Foundation/ Australia and Reach for Change /Sweden ) and 4 Years in Local government as the Deputy Mayor In charge of Economic Development.
He has 10 years of progressive responsibility work experience in Fundraising, managing, and implementing multi-faceted donor-funded development projects (AUSAID, UNICEF ) and worked on a range of successful proposals submitted to the above-mentioned donors.
In addition to his experience and relationship-building experience, Janvier has a solid educational foundation and passion for furthering programs that contribute towards changing people's lives by empowering themselves. My personal attributes include strong team and individual skills, diligence, and a quick learning curve and ability, with Excellent social and networking skills. He is always reliable and punctual in meeting tight deadlines and possesses analytical skills as a detail-oriented staff with an eye for maintaining deadlines and priorities.
