RIIO founder and RIIO School of Ophthalmology Director, Dr. Ciku Mathenge was awarded the Lead Researcher prize at the recently concluded COECSA 2019 congress.
On receiving the award, Dr. Ciku had this to say;
“I was very honoured to be the Chair of the Scientific Program. For the first time COECSA took care of the “C” in its name by holding a 2 hour symposium entirely by French speakers from Africa with simultaneous translation, within the 3 day program. My proudest moment however was receiving an award as the Lead Researcher in the region. Such awards are often won by career academics…..not by someone whose career has been for many years in a provincial government hospital in Nakuru (during which time I dared to become the first ophthalmologist in the region to earn a PhD) and now in a fully private hospital in Kigali. And now that I am also running Rwanda’s first ophthalmology residency program ( the first in the region that is not based on an MMed peogram) this has inspired me to truly embed a spirit of curiosity, critical thinking and thirst for evidence generation in my trainees and that together we continue to seek answers to the obstacles that hinder eye care provision and uptake in Africa”.
