Class 2028
“Dr. Christopher Cash, a Post Graduate Year 1 Resident at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO). My previous experience as a Senior House Officer in the Department of Surgery at Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, The Bahamas, has further developed my passion for eye care.
My journey into Ophthalmology was profoundly shaped by my struggles with vision challenges in high school. Frequent visits to eye clinics were marked by frustratingly long wait times for basic exams. These experiences made me aware of the broader issue: the urgent need for accessible and efficient eye care services. This inspired me to become an Ophthalmologist, committed to improving services and increasing the number of practitioners in our community.
In The Bahamas, we are confronted with a critical eye health crisis. The rising incidence of eye conditions, particularly among an aging population, highlights the urgent need for skilled Ophthalmologists.
By choosing to specialize in Ophthalmology, I aim to create a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives, delivering both immediate relief and enduring benefits. I am very enthusiastic about this program because it integrates medical treatment with surgical methods, providing a comprehensive approach to the varied challenges posed by eye diseases.”
Dr Daniel HATEGEKIMANA is a first-year post-graduate resident at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO).
He was born, raised, and grew up in Rwanda. He is a graduate of general medicine and surgery at University of Rwanda, where he developed a passion for ophthalmology after witnessing the profound impact that restoring vision can have on a patient’s quality of life, after spending a big part of his/her life living with a curable disease.
He found the precision required in ophthalmology both challenging and rewarding. And since joining RIIO, he is excited to be in a team that strives for nothing short of excellence in ophthalmology with a passion of improving vision health in Rwanda. Dr Daniel is excited to make a positive impact in the lives of his patients.”
Dr. Assoumpta GASENGAYIRE is a committed and compassionate resident specializing in
ophthalmology at the RIIO- COESCA. Her inspiration to pursue this field stemmed from a
personal experience, as her grandmother’s struggle with cataract-induced blindness deeply
moved her. Growing up with a strong desire to make a difference, Dr. GASENGAYIRE aimed to
assist not only her grandmother but also the broader community in overcoming preventable
and treatable blindness.
Moreover, Dr. GASENGAYIRE is fascinated by the innovations and technological advancements
in the field of ophthalmology. This interest drives her to continuously enhance her knowledge
and skills, ensuring she remains at the cutting edge of medical practice.
Her dedication to restoring vision and improving the quality of life for her patients underscores
her commitment to making a lasting impact on her community and beyond.
Dr. Alain MBUTYABO BACHWEKI, a Congolese Medical Doctor and first-year Ophthalmology Resident at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO), was born in Bunia, Ituri Province, DRC. He completed his medical degree in 2023 at UNIGOM, Goma, where he spent nine years before joining RIIO.
Eye care in the DRC faces challenges due to limited clinics and trained professionals. During his 2019 internship at HEAL AFRICA Hospital, Dr. Alain participated in a medical camp near Goma, where 700 people received care, including free anti-malarial treatments. A poignant encounter with a 12-year-old blind diabetic girl, whose condition could have been prevented with better resources, inspired his passion for ophthalmology.
Dr. Alain believes vision is life’s greatest gift from God and views ophthalmology as his calling. Joining RIIO is a significant step in his mission to improve eye care in the DRC, guided by Frederick Buechner’s words: “The place God calls you to is where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
Dr. Alexis Ndayishimiye is a passionate ophthalmology resident from Rwanda, inspired by his experiences with undiagnosed prenatal eye disorders like retinoblastoma and congenital cataracts. While working as a general practitioner in Kirehe DH, he saw firsthand the gaps in Rwanda’s healthcare system, which motivated him to specialize in ophthalmology, focusing on early detection and treatment.
He is inspired by the work of Dr. Fred Hollows, particularly the foundation’s outreach programs in Kirehe, which have improved access to eye care for underserved communities. Dr. Ndayishimiye’s background in physics enhances his problem-solving skills, which he applies to ophthalmic care.
He chose to train at RIIO due to its commitment to advancing eye care education through innovative, research-driven approaches. The institution’s focus on creating long-term improvements in eye care for Rwanda and the region aligns with his goal of contributing to the development of eye care systems, especially in underserved communities, like albinos through early detection, treatment, and prevention of eye disorders.
Dr. Evrard Bizimana, a first-year postgraduate resident at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO). Born and raised in Rwanda, I completed my medical training in general medicine and surgery at the University of Rwanda. My passion for ophthalmology was sparked during a rotation in the field, where I was inspired by the life-changing impact of restoring vision.
Driven to make a difference in my home country, I pursued a career in ophthalmology, with the goal of improving access to quality eye care across Rwanda. I found the perfect opportunity through the RIIO-COECSA program that was aligning my purpose and Joined.
Joining RIIO boosted my confidence, and deepened my commitment to addressing the growing need for specialized eye care in Rwanda providing me with advanced clinical training, hands-on experience, and exposure to innovative techniques in eye care.
Now with a strong dedication to both my patients and the broader community, I am focused on making a lasting, positive impact on those with vision impairments in Rwanda.
I am Dr Aimable MUNYESHYAKA, after graduating and spending a year working as a General Practitioner,
I realized my deep commitment to improving eye healthcare in my home country, Rwanda, and
contributing to the global effort to eliminate preventable blindness and correct devastating eye
problems. This mission became even more personal after witnessing several relatives and neighbors
experience life-changing improvements in their vision. Their stories motivated me to find a way to help
others restore this invaluable gift. A friend introduced me to RIIO, which boosted my desire to pursue
the residency program in this particular field. Upon joining, I was impressed by the welcoming learning
environment, the supportive atmosphere, and the professionalism of the lecturers and professors, all of
which reaffirmed my belief that I WILL become a skilled Ophthalmologist and more.
